Welcome back to school after what we hope was a wonderful and restful winter break spent with family and friends. This school year is moving along quickly and we are excited about the educational challenges that lay ahead of us. One of the educational challenges that we deal with every day is addressing the unique and diverse learning needs of our students. Some students need additional time and assistance in order to experience academic success, so we continue to search for ways to accommodate those needs in order for our students to achieve proficiency in the core academic areas.
Beginning this year, there is a change in South Carolina testing requirements. Elementary and middle school students, grades 3-8, will be tested with the SC READY ELA and Mathematics Assessments that includes segments on reading, writing, and mathematics. SCPASS Science and Social Studies Assessments will be given to students in grades 4-8. High school students taking credit courses will be tested with the End of Course Examination Program in the areas of Algebra, English, Geometry, US History, and Biology. The ACT WorkKeys will be administered to students in Grade 11, which include students in their third year of high school. All testing begins April 2016, and continues until the end of the school year. Please make sure your child gets adequate sleep and arrives promptly on testing days to ensure a successful testing experience.
Our hope is for our students to be both academically and personally successful, but for this to happen will require the commitment of students, parents, teachers, as well as the community. We encourage you to get involved and set aside some time each day to talk to your child about what is happening in his/her classes. Remember to celebrate your child’s efforts and successes, and give them the support needed to prepare him/her for a bright and productive future.
